Purpose of the UNIC Ankara internship programme
The purpose of the UNIC Ankara internship programme is twofold:
(a) To provide a framework by which students from diverse academic backgrounds gain exposure to the United Nations in order to enhance their educational experience and gain experience in the work of the United Nations;
(b) And to provide UNIC Ankara with the assistance of qualified students specialized in public information field.
The purpose of internships at UNIC Ankara is not to lead to further employment with the United Nations but to complement an intern’s studies. Therefore, there should be no expectations of employment following the internship.
Applicants to the UNIC Ankara internship programme must at the time of application meet ONE of the following requirements:
(a) Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
(b) Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent);
(c) Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.
Terms of the internship programme
The minimum duration of an internship is two months with a maximum period of up to six months.
Interns are expected to work on a full-time basis under the supervision of a staff member at an appropriate level.
Status of interns
Interns are considered type I gratis personnel. They are not staff members.
Interns may not apply for or be appointed to any position in the Professional or above categories and for positions at the FS-6 and FS-7 levels in the Field Service category during the period of their internship and for the six months immediately following the expiration date thereof.
United Nations interns are not paid. All costs related to travel, insurance, accommodation, and living expenses must be borne by either the interns or their sponsoring institutions.
Interns will be responsible for obtaining and financing the necessary visas.
Interns will arrange and finance their travel to the United Nations Information Centre in Ankara.
Interns will be responsible for costs arising from accidents and/or illness incurred during the internship and must show proof of a valid major medical insurance coverage.
Interns must be discreet and keep confidential any and all unpublished information obtained during the course of the internship and may not publish any documents based on such information.
Knowledge of English and Turkish is required for internship at UNIC Ankara. Knowledge of another UN official language would be an asset.
